RIGGS FAMILY MILITARY SERVICE

The first military service of the Riggs family we are aware of started during the Civil War, which began in April 1861 when the Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumpter. Our families had always lived in the southern states and some were slave owners. Mr. Riggs and all of his brothers, even his father for a short time, served in the Confederate army.
Mr. Riggs enlisted 1 October 1862, in Milam County, Texas, as a Private in Company D 4th Regt. Texas Cavalry under Captain Lesueur. He served 5 ½ months, until he was wounded during a skirmish at Franklin, Louisiana, on 14 April 1863.

FRANKLIN, LA WHERE BRANNICK RIGGS WAS WONDED DURING THE CIVIL WAR

He was taken to a Confederate hospital and the following day was captured, along with many others in the hospital, by the Union forces. Having had his arm and shoulder shattered and the bullet almost against his back bone, he was the same as a dead man. The Union doctors wanted to amputate his arm, but he protested. Being a Mason, he gave the Masonic sign to a young Union doctor, also a Mason, and the young doctor helped him to avoid amputation. He was taken care of in a private home where he stayed for a number of months. Because Mr. Riggs was a sincere and good man, respected by his captors, he was paroled, provided a wagon, released and allowed to travel home. Our small family had remained in Milam County Texas while he was away at the war. It took some time but Mr. Riggs’ arm did recover, but was stiff from then on.
In a book called “Index to Arkansas Confederate Soldiers, Volume III, P-Z, p. 45-46 I found several Thomas Riggs names. Looking on the internet under Civil War Soldiers and Sailors I found a Thomas Riggs, Pvt. Age 59, Enl 1 Sep 1861 at Pocahantas, Ark., disch before 31 Dec 1862. He enlisted in the 8th Arkansas Infantry Regiment Company G )new). In this same unit there were several men enlisted together from Izard County Arkansas. In addition to Thomas Riggs there was a James Felton, age 60, and a John W. Copeland. I feel it is reasonable to assume this Thomas Riggs is our Thomas Riggs from Izard County Arkansas.
In 1862 Brannick’s brother, James Monroe, joined James R. Shaler’s Infantry, being recruited from Izard County Arkansas. James was a 2nd Lieutenant and then a Lt. Colonel during the Civil war. As a 1st Lt. James was captured 8 Apr 1862 and held as a POW at Alton, Illinois. In Sept. 1862 he was taken to Vicksburg and released in a prisoner exchange. He was age 27.
Brannick’s brother, Barney Kemp served with James in Arkansas. Barney died of pneumonia in 1863 in Little Rock, Arkansas, while serving as a Lieutenant. We have no record of the service of William Carroll Riggs. Brannick’s youngest brother also enlisted but we have no record of his service or what happened to him.

FAMILY MEMBER RELATIONSHIP NUMBERING SYSTEM

A numbering system has been developed that assigns a unique chain of digits to each family member. These unique numbers are used throughout the website to help identify family member relationships. The second number is the position of each child in the family of ( 1 ) Thomas and ( 1A ) Rhoda Riggs, parents of ( 4 ) Brannick Riggs who was their fourth child.

Because this is a website for the Brannick Riggs family the second number is the position of ( 4 ) Brannick

The third number is the position of each child in the family of ( 4 ) Brannick and ( 4A ) Mary Elizabeth Riggs.  For example:
        1-4-5     Brannick Benjamin Riggs
He is the 5th child of Brannick and Mary Elizabeth.

The fourth number is the position of a child in that child’s family.
        1-4-5-4      Thomas Riggs
He is the 4th child of Brannick Benjamin Riggs, the grandchild of Brannick and Mary Elizabeth Riggs.

The fifth number is the position of a child in that child’s family.
        1-4-5-4-2      Nancy Ruth Riggs Sloan
She is the second child of Thomas Riggs, the great grandchild of Brannick and Mary Elizabeth.

The sixth number is the position of a child in that child’s family.
        1-4-5-4-2-4    Troy Gordon Sloan
He is the 4th child of Nancy Ruth Riggs Sloan, the great, great grandchild of Brannick and Mary Elizabeth.

The seventh number is the position of a child in that child’s family.
        1-4-5-4-2-4-5    Charlard Andre` Sloan
He is the 5th child of Troy Gordon Sloan, the great, great, great grandchild of Brannick and Mary Elizabeth.

The spouse of each descendant is listed under the descendant's name with an explanation and family member number the same as their spouse with a letter after the number, "A" indicating descendant's first spouse, "B" the second, etc.
